Antioxidant will help patients with multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. A new study conducted at the Oregon University of Health and Science has found that lipoic acid, which has antioxidant properties, can significantly improve the quality of life of people suffering from multiple sclerosis.

The study involved 51 volunteers with multiple sclerosis. 27 participants received 1200 milligrams of lipoic acid per day, and the rest participants received a placebo. The study has been lasted for 2 years, UPI.com reports.

The experts have established that in patients with second-progressive multiple sclerosis who took lipoic acid, the rate of brain atrophy decreased by 68% compared to participants receiving a placebo. In addition, the improvements of the motor function were observed in the volunteers. The scientists plan to continue their study.
