A two-vaccine regimen may provide the best protection against Ebola virus

A study has shown that sequential administration of two different Ebola virus vaccines at regular intervals may provide the best immune response.

Researchers from Holland have evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of various Ebola virus vaccination regimens and concluded that a specific two-vaccine regimen will give an optimal immune response, which will be expressed in more intensive antibody production.

The protection regime proposed by the authors includes a monovalent vaccine based on the adenoviral Ad26.ZEBOV glycoprotein of Ebola virus and an enhancing drug manufactured by Bavarian MVA-BN-Filo, created on the basis of the modified Ankara smallpox virus. This drug encodes the glycoproteins of the Zaire and Sudanese strains of Ebola virus. The developed regime assumes sequential administration of the primer and booster. At the first stage, Ad26.ZEBOV is used (provides the primary sensitization of the immune system), and MVA-BN-Filo stimulating the primary response is used at the second stage. According to the authors, the tested regimes for the use of the above vaccines have demonstrated an acceptable safety profile, no deaths and no adverse events.
