Atopic dermatitis in adults: causes and treatment

Atopic dermatitis is a skin disease manifested by a rash against the background of severe dry skin and accompanied by reddening of the skin and severe itching.

Why does atopic dermatitis occur?

Atopic dermatitis occurs more often in childhood, and remission occurs in adulthood. However, in some patients, the disease persists for life and has a significant impact on its quality.

Exacerbation of atopic dermatitis most often occurs under the influence of various allergens:

  • Domestic dust
  • Animal hair
  • Food allergens
  • Skin contact with cosmetic or aggressive detergents.

Exacerbation of atopic dermatitis can provoke a sharp change in ambient temperature or even stress.

To prevent such exacerbations, you should identify the allergen and avoid contact with it.

What are the symptoms of atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis varies from person to person. The periods of remission may change the periods of exacerbations.

During exacerbation, the following reactions occure:

  • Dry skin
  • Rash
  • Itching

Atopic dermatitis may appear on any part of the body, but is most often localized on a face and neck, head (hair), elbows and knees, wrists and hands, forearms.

Why should atopic dermatitis be treated?

Because this disease can often be combined with other allergic pathologies, such as allergic rhinitis or bronchial asthma. Common complications of atopic dermatitis are bacterial and fungal skin lesions.

The therapy against atopic dermatitis should include the following steps:

  1. First of all, people with atopic dermatitis should avoid stress and contact with allergens.
  2. Proper skin care should provide moisturizing, softening, and restoring the water balance of the skin. For this purpose, you should use various lotions, creams or bath products that will protect the skin from moisture loss.
  3. Treatment of atopic dermatitis exacerbations includes the use of antiallergic agents, for example, Tigofast.
