Developing a method for treating a fatal brain disease
Amyloid proteins are able to induce the death of neurons and cause to the most severe consequences and the development of life-threatening and currently incurable forms of dementia. During the study, the scientists injected an oxygenation catalyst into the brains of mice suffering from a disease similar to Alzheimer's. Then, it was powered by a beam of light through the skull for 30 minutes every day.
This study lasted one week. In conclusion, the analysis of the nerve tissue has shown that the level of amyloid protein was significantly reduced. The scientists believe that the catalyst destabilizes pathogenic plaques, thereby attaching oxygen atoms to their molecules. As a result, the folded amyloid structure collapses. Summing up, we can say that using this method it is possible to fight the amyloid proteins in the whole body.
