Researchers have managed to restore the heart muscle

Scientists from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf have used a mix of cells for obtaining of cardiac tissue samples. Then they were used as patches for the hearts of guinea pigs with heart failure, Zee News reports.

The heart damage, which always goes hand in hand with heart failure often leads to loss of muscle tissue. This process is irreversible because the heart tissue can not be regenerated. But experts have figured out how to solve this problem.

They took two cell types obtained from human stem cells. These were the cardiac muscle cells and endothelial cells lining the inside of blood vessels. On this basis, it was managed to create strips of muscle tissue. Next, the strips were transplanted to the guinea pigs with heart damage.

Within 28 days after implantation there was established that the strips have not only survived, but also have formed new muscle. The ability of the heart to pump the blood has improved by 31% just after the transplantation.
