Researchers have revealed stem cells in unexpected places

Scientists from the Academy at the University of Gothenburg have found neural stem cells in the brains of epileptics. The astonishing thing is that the cells were revealed in unusual places, UPI.com reports. The neural stem cells with the capacity to generate new cells are usually found in the hippocampus. This zone is associated with memory and learning ability. Also, these cells can be found in the subventricular zone of the brain.

Nevertheless, a tissue analysis of 14 patients, treated for epilepsy, has shown that the described cells were outside of these two zones. According to the scientists, the neural stem cells can transform into neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in about 60% of patients. It is proved in the laboratory experiment, where the scientists have decided to grow the detected cells.

By the way, the low dose of omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil capsules is able to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures when medication therapy fails. Three capsules of fish oil a day (about 1080 mg of omega-3 fatty acids) are sufficient for a positive effect appeared. When omega-3 fatty acids get into the central nervous system, they reduce the excitability of the brain cells, causing seizures.
