Scientists approached the creation of a vaccine against gonorrhea

Scientists from the University of Oregon have revealed two proteins that may help to create a vaccine against gonorrhea. Gonococcus (gonorrhea causative agent) is a super-bacterium that is resistant to all existing antibiotics. Therefore, the appearance of the vaccine will be a real breakthrough, Medical Xpress reports.

The scientists have subjected the gonococcus to phenotypic screening. The researchers focused on the seven proteins of bacterial membrane, consisting of an outer membrane, a cellular wall and an internal membrane. The scientists wanted to find out whether any protein would exhibit the properties of a vaccine antigen.

The researchers have created more than 1000 different conditions to affect the proteins. The scientists have identified 91 conditions that have exclusively positive or negative effect on the proteins. Analysis of 37 harmful and 57 useful compounds allowed to distinguish three groups of phenotypes. NGO1985

and NGO2121 proteins possessed the highest sensitivity to antimicrobial compounds. According to experts, these proteins are the best suitable for the development of the vaccine.
