Scientists will improve ear drops using a special hydrogel

Scientists from the University of Montana have decided to improve the drugs by developing a thermostable gel that is used in a single dose, and they have already collected preclinical data confirming its effectiveness.

The research team has developed 2 separate hydrogel-based delivery systems. Both systems are represented as a complex of activated tetraethylorthosilicate with different large molecules and ciprofloxacin. They remain inside the syringe in a liquid state, but then rapidly turn into a gel when they enter the ear, thereby providing a stable and sustained release of the drug. In earlier studies, these drugs were able to kill strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus (the most common causative agents of ear infections).

Scientists claim that a single dose of the gel at home can reduce resistance to antibacterial drugs and improve treatment options.
