The first system for the internal scoliosis correction has been approved

The FDA has approved Vertebral Body Tethering System, the first invasive spinal fixation device for the correction of idiopathic scoliosis in children and adolescents who have not responded to existing conservative treatment methods, such as external fixation, and those whose spinal curvature is approaching or has reached the state where only surgical treatment is considered. The system includes a cord, bone anchors and screws. All the rigid elements of the system are made of titanium alloy, similar to that which is usually used for the production of spinal implants. The cord is made of durable flexible polyethylene terephthalate polymer. The system is surgically implanted using endoscopic techniques and mounted under tension the same as braces that align the dentition.
