Researchers have approached to creation of a new vaccine against tuberculosis
According to scientists, biogranules are used for the delivery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens (Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium bovis). They are natural polyesters, created by a non-tubercular bacterium (E. coli), UPI.com reports.
Mycobacterial antigens can induce cell-mediated immune response in laboratory mice. However, these mycobacteria have no enzymes necessary for the production of biogranules. The scientists have developed a new method in order to begin a production of the enzyme in non-tuberculous bacteria Mycobacterium smegmatis.
The obtained biogranules were injected in mice and the immune responses were monitored. The scientists concluded that a new vaccine can prevent tuberculosis. The current vaccine against tuberculosis was designed in 1921. It is dangerous for people with weakened immune systems.
