Researchers learned more about diabetes

The team of scientists has found why the blood enzyme dipeptidylpeptidase-4 (DPP4) concentration is increased in diabetics. Perhaps the discovery of the scientists will lead to the development of new methods of treating diabetes, Zee News reports.

DPP4 inhibitors, such as, sitagliptin, vildagliptin and saxagliptin are prescribed for people with diabetes. Until now it was not clear why the concentration of this enzyme in diabetics is increased. The researchers have established that T-helpers 17 produce a large number of DPP4. These are the immune system cells.

KLK5 enzyme also plays an important role. It separates DPP4 from the surface of the T-helper 17. Thereafter, DPP4 starts to accumulate in the blood. According to the scientists, DPP4 destroys incretins – hormones stimulating the secretion of insulin after eating.
