Special medical equipment will be used against COVID-19

FDA authorization applies exclusively to adult patients with an inevitable risk of developing respiratory failure.
The system, designed for use in intensive care units, includes an apheresis device Spectra Optia and special filters. Spectra Optia is commonly used for different cell collection and processing procedures, including leukocyte and platelet depletion, and erythrocyte and plasma filtration as well. Deper 2000 cylindrical adsorption cartridges manufactured by Marker Therapeutics AG include activated carbon granules and resins that help to remove cytokines from plasma in cases of liver failure or septic shock, and they are also used for blood detoxification after drug overdose or poisoning.
The new system will be used to remove excess inflammatory proteins from blood and plasma, which are produced in excess by the immune system in case of infection and provoke so-called cytokine storm. According to the agency, the cytokine storm may cause severe inflammation, tissue damage and rapidly progressive shock resulting respiratory failure and death.
